WiFi Cell Phones Become a Reality

Tuesday, April 11, 2006

WiFi Cell Phones have been a topic of discussion recently with the rise of VoIP technology. For those that have come accustomed to using VoIP on their PC or as the telephone provider in their home can appreciate the benefits of cheap calls that WiFi cell phones that use VoIP technology could bring.

The major limitation of WiFi cell phones is that they can only be used in WiFi hot zones, in other words an area that has a wireless internet connection. This could be your home or a city that has WiFi access. It’s okay that you can experience cheap VoIP calls through your WiFi cell phone in a WiFi hotspot but what happens if you’re making a call and you leave the hotspot. This was one of the major concerns for WiFi cell phone technology.

Now this restriction has been overcome as the latest set of WiFi cell phones due to be released soon can actually switch between VoIP and standard cell phone signals with ease. This was demonstrated at the CTIA Wireless 2006 conference in Los Vegas where a Nokia representative demonstrated the invisible transition between WiFi and VoIP.

This now means that WiFi cell phone technology is something that can be easily accessible and beneficial to the mass cell phone market. ABI Research has said that the WiFi cell phones are expected to increase to one hundred million units annually by 2009.
