One Hundred Million Skype Users

Over one hundred million (100,000,000) Skype users are now registered with Skype. This means Skype has nearly doubled its user base since it was taken over by eBay in September 2005. This is a great landmark for Skype, however the figure can actually be misleading because it does not necessarily represent the number of Skype users but the number of registered usernames.

eBay says that Skype users reach a peak of about 6 million during peak times. Figures from back in July show that when Skype had 45 million registered users only 1.7 million were actually using a paid service, the rest were using the free services available. Taking this into account it is actually difficult to follow exactly how successful the business is. However with Skype users out numbering any other VoIP service they are definitely doing something right.
