Skype is huge in China despite VoIP banDespite the VoIP ban imposed by the Chinese government Skype still remains extremely popular with the Chinese public. So much so that China is now Skype's biggest market. China’s ban does not extend to PC to PC VoIP communication but does affect landline and mobile call so the Skypeout service from Skype is actually illegal. Skype now has 13 million registered usernames in China and just over 100 million worldwide. China represents 13% of Skype's consumer base even though part of their service is banned in China. Officially with Skypeout and a SkypeIn being an illegal service in China then it is difficult for Skype to monetize on this large consumer base. With such a large consumer representation it was no wonder that Skype accepted Chinese censorship regulations to be enforced in their software. |
