Could we see a Vonage VoIP PSP Cell Phone?

Friday, May 12, 2006

Sony recently had its pre E3 Press Conference and they announced that the PSP will have VoIP capabilities. We recently reported that VoIP function for the PSP was in the pipeline and Sony looks to be continuing down this path since VoIP functionality would improve the online gaming experience of the PSP as well as see it as a possible VoIP Cell Phone.

Since the PSP already has a microphone and WiFi internet access then the only thing needed to convert the PSP to a WiFi VoIP powered cell phone would be a firmware upgrade. It looks likely that Sony is already working on this but there are also rumors that Vonage may be working on a firmware upgrade to allow VoIP functionality for PSPs.

Since Vonage has a partnership with WiFi operator Cloud we could see a Vonage VoIP enabled PSP cell phone being used at over 7000 WiFi hotspots across the US. A similar service could also be setup for the Nintendo DS. The rumored source is apparently from someone close to Vonage and was reported on the UK T3 gadget magazine.
